Hello, my name is Bill Petrosky, and I am the Founder and Executive Director of Rods 4 Recovery.
Like many, my journey with addiction began during a period of personal hardship. After experiencing a divorce during the COVID-19 pandemic and losing my mother unexpectedly just months later, what started as occasional beers quickly spiraled into alcoholism. On December 9, 2021, I suffered a life-threatening medical emergency from esophageal varices and was rushed into emergency surgery—just ten minutes from losing my life. It was then that I learned I also had stage three liver cancer.
The road to recovery was not straightforward. Despite enduring countless medical appointments and intensive radiation treatments to qualify for a transplant, I was removed from the list after alcohol was found in my system. I realized that I needed a different approach, so I checked myself into an inpatient program at Recovery Centers of America for a 31-day stay. There, I gained a deeper understanding of addiction—not just its impact on me, but on everyone who cared about me.
During my treatment, I began to think about how I could help others facing similar struggles. As a lifelong fisherman, I knew firsthand the therapeutic power of being on the water and connecting with others. That insight became the foundation for Rods 4 Recovery.
Who We Are and Our Mission
Rods 4 Recovery is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals overcoming addiction by harnessing the restorative power of fishing. We provide fishing gear, instruction in techniques like fly fishing and lure casting, and offer classes in fly tying and rod building. Our programs also include open discussion meetings held on the boat, creating a supportive and welcoming environment for everyone involved.
Our mission is simple: to offer hope, companionship, and a healthy outlet for those in recovery, while also supporting their families. We believe that having a hobby, building community, and spending time in nature can be powerful tools in the recovery process.
We invite you to join us—whether you’re seeking support, looking to volunteer, or simply want to enjoy a day of fishing with your family. At Rods 4 Recovery, everyone is welcome.
Thank you,
Bill Petrosky
